As society develops and living standards improve, parents strive to provide their children with abundant material conditions, leading to a comfortable life where the whole family dotes on the child, and physical punishment becomes increasingly rare. Despite these favorable circumstances, children may still experience psychological issues. Why?

Indeed, in the fast-paced lifestyle of modern times, many parents are preoccupied with work and the myriad of daily tasks, which can lead to a lack of deep understanding of parenting knowledge. There is often an overemphasis on academic achievement, at the expense of paying adequate attention to and nurturing the emotional well-being of their children.

Emotional neglect refers to the scenario in which parents, during the process of raising their children, fail to adequately recognize, understand, and respond to their child's emotional needs. When a child tries to express their inner feelings and thoughts, the parents lack the patience to listen; when the child has an emotional response, the parents either ignore it or even belittle and negate the child's emotional experiences. There is also a lack of intimate interaction and emotional communication with the child in daily life, with parents focusing only on academic performance and behavioral conduct.

The Impact of Emotional Neglect on Children

01 Irreversible Physiological Damage

Professor Edward Tronick, a psychology professor at the University of Manchester, conducted a famous experiment known as the "Still Face Experiment," which suggests that when parents fail to respond to a child's emotional cues for extended periods, it may lead to the death of cells in critical areas of the child's brain.

02 Psychological Issues

Children may struggle with identifying, expressing, and managing their own emotions, making them more susceptible to psychological issues such as anxiety and depression. In severe cases, this can lead to serious behaviors such as self-harm or suicidal attempts.

03 Low Self-Esteem

Frequent emotional neglect can lead children to believe that they are unimportant and unworthy of care and attention, thereby reducing their sense of self-worth.

04 Social Issues

Due to a lack of emotional nurturing from parents, children may develop poor emotional communication and empathy skills, which can significantly impact their interpersonal relationships.

05 Increased Risk of Psychological Disorders

Emotional neglect can cause psychological trauma in children, which may affect their emotional health, intimate relationships, and interpersonal interactions well into adulthood.

What Parents Should Do

1.Self-Improvement. Parents need to recognize that emotional attention and nurturing are crucial for their child's mental health and development. They should actively seek out knowledge and resources to improve their own sensitivity to emotions.

2.Learn to Listen

When a child expresses their emotions, parents should not ignore them or rush to lecture. Whether the child's expression is positive or negative, even if it's just a minor issue that has caused a small emotional response, parents should listen patiently.

3.Try to Empathize from the Child's Perspective

From a parent's perspective, it might be easy to dismiss a child's concerns as overreactions, immaturity, or even find them amusing. However, if parents make an effort to see things from their child's point of view, they may better understand the child's situation and feelings. This empathetic approach allows parents to provide more appropriate emotional support.

4.Emotional Development

Parents need to teach children to recognize their emotions and give them names, discussing ways to manage these feelings. This process helps cultivate a child's ability to identify, express, and manage their emotions effectively.

5. Let Go of False Pride and Avoid Moral Coercion

Some parents are more likely to neglect or even harm their child's feelings in front of acquaintances. For example, if a friend's child wants to play with the parent's child’s toy and the child refuses, the parent might disregard the child's feelings and insist on giving the toy to the other child, sometimes even criticizing their own child for not sharing. Similarly, when a visitor's child damages something precious to their own child, parents might morally coerce their child into forgiving the other child without acknowledging the child's distress.

A child possesses a rich emotional world, and their holistic growth and development are significantly influenced by the family environment. Parents, as the first guides in a child’s life journey, play a crucial role and should provide ample love, understanding, and guidance.
