Peter Thiel, a well-known figure in the investment community of Silicon Valley, recently stated that Elon Musk, the renowned American entrepreneur and head of Tesla and SpaceX, has abandoned his earlier vision of establishing a new society through colonizing Mars.
In an interview with columnist Ross Douthat, Thiel mentioned that Musk no longer views the colonization of Mars as a viable path for reshaping human society. He noted that as a friend of Musk, he observed that the latter began to gradually move away from his original beliefs about the Mars project this year. Thiel described 2024 as "the year Elon said goodbye to the dream of Mars."
Elon Musk has always regarded expanding humanity to other planets as one of his key visions. However, in the interview, Peter Thiel mentioned that the ideological goals once associated with this plan have now been stripped away, leaving only its technical significance. Previously, Musk had predicted that humans might achieve a Mars landing by 2028 and repeatedly emphasized that establishing a Mars colony is crucial for ensuring the continuity of human civilization in extreme scenarios.
