Recently, with the support of the "Guarding Heart and Mind" national mental health service public welfare initiative — a collaboration between Xinhua News Agency and the China Guanghua Science and Technology Foundation — the Education Bureau of Suihua City, Heilongjiang Province organized a training meeting on mental health assessment for the entire city.
A total of 120,000 middle school and primary school students and teachers participated in the event. More than 500 participants, including mental health work coordinators from the city's education bureaus, teacher training schools, and mental health assessment teachers from primary and secondary schools across the city, attended the training session.
The training session featured a special lecture titled “Identification and Intervention in Psychological Crises Among Primary and Secondary School Students” by Chen Wei, a mentor in the Department of Psychology at the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University. The training clarified the entire process of mental health assessment, including the use of psychological scales, accurate identification of issues, effective intervention strategies, and preventive measures. It provided professional guidance for the development of mental health initiatives across Suihua City. Taking this event and training as an opportunity, the Suihua Municipal Education Bureau aims to establish a comprehensive, integrated mental health work system that combines health education, monitoring and early warning, counseling services, and intervention and response — forming a closed-loop mechanism for mental health management.
The Suihua Municipal Education Bureau has always placed great emphasis on mental health education, continuously improving the working mechanism of psychological well-being programs, strengthening the mental health teaching workforce, and actively exploring effective practices. As a result, they have developed a distinctive model of mental health work tailored to the needs of Suihua. The bureau has standardized mental health education curricula, requiring schools to include mental health courses in their weekly schedules, ensuring that each class receives at least one 45-minute session every two weeks. In addition, mental health education is delivered through various channels, including themed class meetings, psychological lectures, group counseling sessions, individual consultations, psychodrama performances, campus radio broadcasts, and publicity boards.Furthermore, the Suihua Education Bureau has collaborated with multiple departments such as the Women's Federation, the Communist Youth League, the Health Commission, the Cyberspace Administration, and the Public Security Bureau to jointly promote mental health awareness. This initiative marks a shift from focusing solely on academic performance to emphasizing the emotional and psychological growth of children, awakening public awareness about the shared responsibility of protecting and supporting youth mental health.
